Strangers with signs

Suehenry@wilknewsradio.com

If there’s a great place to trap your teenager, it’s in the car.
The vehicle is rolling. The seats are somewhat comfortable. And, the chance to grab their full attention improves once you take the earbuds from their i-pod listening ears.
Although it takes forever, I like to drive my daughter to school. First, there are no nasty brothers in the car to distract from our discussion. Second, it’s easy to appease her by letting her choose the radio station. I can’t understand why anybody likes today’s pedestrian radio tunes, but that’s only one cranky lady’s opinion.
So, I consider this commute our time. I also consider it my time. It’s wonderful to sort through the process of what’s going on in school, what’s happening in the world and what’s important in my daughter’s world.
Today, I dropped my daughter off at the school of our collective choice. She attends parochial school and I support the cause. Our daughter is allowed to follow our faith while learning and studying. It’s the way we want her to learn.
On my way over the Veterans’ Memorial Bridge by the Luzerne County Courthouse, I saw an unusual sight. There were perhaps six pro-life protesters with giant photo signs. Some of the photos showed a cute baby girl.
The others showed a bloody aborted baby.
While we live in a world where people clamor for “free speech,” I can’t imagine how this expression helps the pro life cause. What kind of parent has the time during morning rush hour to sit down and have a thought-provoking, intelligent conversation with a young child about a butchered baby? Who has the skills to slap together a meaningful 45-second discussion about this?
My kids, through the teachings of their parents, are learning about a lot of things in the world. We talk about everything from terrorism to television. We tell them how much we love them and how we will attempt to get through things together. I don’t need some stranger with a sign to join the discussion. I worry that such vulgar and inappropriate displays will turn people off to something they need to discuss in a meaningful way, minus the props.
Of course, some callers disagreed. One said desperate times call for desperate measures. A man who said he carries such signs said I could use an alternative route if I didn’t want to look. Others said low-income single women shouldn’t be parents.
We all think about this issue in different ways. But, we are allowed to address it in our own way at our own comfort level.
