Mayor Doherty and the Scranton Council Cameras

I wonder if Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty regrets removing Channel 61 cameras from City Hall. He told Kevin and myself on the air Monday that he didn’t. I think he should. It never looks good when you pull down the drapes and lock the door to citizens. I wonder if he feels bad that elderly people, some disabled, had to stand outside in the cold last Thursday for hours. Some didn’t get in at all. When they did get in, they had to go through security and a metal detector before getting a seat. I hope every person who goes to City Hall will have to go through the same security.  It should not happen only at Council meetings. There was plenty of room in the balcony for the overflow crowd, but Mayor Doherty closed that off, saying there was vandalism and that citizens were wandering the halls. I asked Mayor Doherty to reconsider closing that balcony, and he laughingly agreed. I hope he wasn’t joking. This whole situation is not funny. Scranton has serious financial problems to deal with, and now, more than ever, the citizens need to get involved. Locking the front door, tightening security for council meetings, and closing the balcony in effect tell the people that they have to work very hard to get involved in government. I hope the Scranton residents are ready to get their hands dirty.
