Food For Prison Not Bid Out In Luzerne Co.

Luzerne County Sollicitor James Blaum says a deal with Commonwealth Foods to deliver groceries to the Luzerne County Prison wasn't up to legal snuff.

The owner of Commonwealth Foods is a friend of Luzerne County Commissioner Greg Skrepenak.  The prison spends about a million dollars a year on groceries and kitchen items, but it hasn't been bidding those items for about two years.

County and state laws require sealed bids for deals that big.

The purchases had been "piecemealed" yo duck below the bidding requirements.  Blaum doesn't suspect anything criminal, but the purchases will be investigated.
