Candidate-a-palooza!

Suehenry@wilknewsradio.com

We in the talk radio biz should really be careful what we wish for, because you know we’re gonna get it!
And so, dear gentle people, are you. All told, I think you heard around three hours of live political coverage on WILK on this first day of April. It was Super Tuesday II. Phat Tuesday. Fat Tuesday. Two for Tuesday (yeah, I know….wrong radio station).
I said this morning that political followers will be talking about this day in five, 10, 25 and 50 years in some cases. No one can recall two major presidential candidates in one Northeastern Pennsylvania town in one day, not even the well-educated among us. Sen. Barack Obama appeared first today, zooming up River Street in his Magic Bus. Conspicuous in his absence was Sen. Obama’s new BFF, Bowlin’ Bob Casey. Let’s give that one a rest for now.
Sen. Obama appeared before a capacity crowd in the Marts Center and put the faithful under his spell for more than an hour. Sen. Obama promised to end the war in Iraq, provide health care for all, stop the brain drain in the United States, fix the economy and end the deficit spending policies of the Bush administration.
He also promised every America a unicorn. Just kidding! April Fools!
I understand politicians make promises, but I believe some of these lofty notions just aren’t possible.
Here’s another problem I have with Sen. Obama’s rhetoric. I can’t understand why someone vying to be president can’t even acknowledge the person who has the title. This “George Bush” business is a deliberate slap to the president. I believe the person who is the president should enjoy the title and you should refer to him or her using it. You aren’t going to refer to Sen. Obama as “Barry” should he win, are you? You’d better not. This disrespectful and snide lack of respect should cease.
Here’s another one that starting to send a chill up my back from Sen. Obama. Listen closely as he references “the White House” as “my White House.” Really? Last time I checked, we the people of the U.S. own that place. I believe Sen. Obama is the most elitist candidate in this race and believes he can take ownership of things that aren’t his.
What about you? “Our White House” sounds much more inclusive, and isn’t that a theme of Sen. Obama’s campaign? You’re welcome!
Now, on to Sen. Clinton’s visit to King’s College this afternoon. Say what you will, but Sen. Clinton has this campaigning thing knocked. She had a pep band to warm up the throng. She had friendly pals sitting up front for encouragement. She ran through that stump speech with conviction. She promised to bring home the troops, forgive college loans and clamp down on richies who don’t pay enough taxes.
She promised to stop the importation of Chinese pharmaceuticals that are stirred carelessly in giant pots with dirty spoons by trained goats in filthy thatched huts! April Fools again! She did talk about the filthy production conditions without referencing the pots, spoons or goats.
Her speech was very similar to Sen. Obama’s, but she used a clever approach. She said the election is like a long job interview and she’s got the better resume.
Well, Sen. Clinton, this speech would work very well in the rest of the country, but you gave it in Luzerne County. So, who are you related to? Oh, never mind.
We have three more weeks before you Dems mark your ballots and I will relish every moment until you do, then maybe more! In the meantime, my guy, Sen. John McCain, is visiting his old school and other nostalgic, friendly haunts. I’m sure that comfort tour won’t last much longer!
By the way, today was my grandmother Violet’s birthday. She was a good Republican for many years and very involved in the politics up North. If she saw me hanging around with Dems today, I hope she noticed I wore a red suit to represent, in a subversive way, our side. If she didn’t take the clue, I think I’ll stay down here for as long as possible to avoid further questioning!
