Today, life went full circle for me.
At 10:05, I interviewed Dr. Steven Locnikar about his book, “Dr. Hyde.” Steven is a 1981 graduate of King’s College who has been a number of things: star athlete, stellar student, plastic surgeon and drug addict, in that order. Steven explained to me today that he has always been driven, first academically, then as someone whose world caved in because he became hopelessly addicted to cocaine. It became his world, as the basketball court and operating room had been in his past. He threw away his family, his practice and his beautiful home in Scottsdale over his obsession with drugs. He successfully completed drug treatment at one point, only to fall into the clutches of alcohol.
I also had the pleasure today of meeting many students of the class of 2011, which will put them out in the world 30 years after Steven Locnikar’s graduation. They, too, bring so much to the table. Their plans include soccer fields, newsrooms, classrooms and service to the church. They hold so much promise for the future, and I have to say I was surprised at their enthusiasm, although it was only their first day in the classroom.
I told them the tale of a young man who majored in physics and took his talents to the West Coast, where he made oodles of money and had a thriving career. I showed them the face on the cover of the book, a handsome man with an easy smile in medical scrubs whose world collapsed just like the lives of millions of others have done. And, I hoped with all my heart that their lives will be filled with promise, not despair.
